Parallel Strip Driveway With White Gravel
Parallel Strip Driveway With White Gravel
Parallel concrete strip driveways with white gravel channels are the most visually precise driveway format in current residential design. Two parallel concrete strips - wide enough to accommodate each wheel track - run the length of the driveway, separated by a band of white pea gravel that fills the centre channel and any side margins. The vehicle's tyres travel on concrete; the gravel provides drainage and visual separation.
From the street, the effect is a bold graphic - two clean concrete lines framing a white gravel centre, with the geometry of the concrete strips echoing the horizontal lines of the home above. Against a flat-roof contemporary home with flush-panel garage doors and light-coloured cladding, this is one of the most cohesive driveway formats available. The restraint is the point: every element of the composition is working.
Practically, the white gravel is low maintenance - it compacts under vehicle weight and rarely requires replenishment. The concrete strips themselves are smooth or lightly broom-finished; the visual interest comes from the composition, not surface detail. Drainage is naturally excellent because the gravel channel provides a permeable surface between the impervious concrete strips.
Cost runs $10-18 per sq ft of total driveway coverage, depending on strip width, gravel channel width, and edging specification. Narrower strips with a wider central gravel band are at the lower end.
