White or light-toned exposed aggregate is having a moment in contemporary outdoor design — and it makes sense why. The combination of a bright base concrete with white quartz or white marble aggregate produces a surface that feels clean and modern without the flatness of smooth white concrete. The texture of the exposed stones catches light differently throughout the day, giving the surface a subtle visual depth. It pairs particularly well with dark-framed windows, black metal furniture, and green plantings — the contrast is striking and very photogenic. From a practical standpoint, white aggregate stays cooler underfoot than dark surfaces in direct sun, which matters for pool decks and outdoor dining areas in warm climates. Cost is $9–14/sq ft installed — between plain broom finish and stamped. The one maintenance consideration: white surfaces show staining from leaves, rust, and organic matter more readily than darker finishes. A penetrating sealer applied annually significantly reduces this issue.
